We are proud to have supported the organization of the first ever intergovernmental Summit of Heads of State and Government to be held entirely online: The Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) Virtual Summit, a 24-hour live stream event held on 22 November 2018, chaired by the President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, H.E. Ms. Hilda Heine.
The Virtual Summit mobilized support for nations to show leadership and commit to raising their level of ambition in solidarity with the most vulnerable. The Summit was a Talanoa Dialogue event, an agreed mechanism of the UN climate negotiations (UNFCCC) for the promotion of enhanced national action under the Paris Agreement.
The entirely online, carbon-free event brought together some 45 Government Leaders from 5 continents to step up their countries’ climate ambitions. 49 countries pledged to raise the ambition of their climate targets by 2020.
Aroha supported the CVF Chair to prepare, host and follow-up on the Summit and also worked closely with key partners to the event such as the Climate Action Network International and an all-women group of “Summit Champions” co-chaired by Christiana Figueres and Rachel Kyte.
The Summit resulted in the "Jumemmej Declaration" which CVF members brought to COP24 at Katowice in December 2018, supporting a decision there by the UN Member states to reaffirm the call for all nations to submit updated national contributions to the Paris Agreement (or NDCs) by 2020 in the highest possible effort.
